Epi-noWhat’s all the fuss about the epi no childbirth trainer?

Is it what it’s cracked up to be … or just another expensive device pregnant mothers can do without?

It’s a discussion I have seen divide parents on Facebook, so I thought I’d investigate.

Epi No or Epi Yes?

Let’s chat about the epi no childbirth trainer with the experts in today’s video.

But first … what is an epi no?

The epi-no is a device made in Germany which claims to make natural childbirth easier.

They also say it can reduce the risk of tearing and having an episiotomy … hmmm … sorry to say, but I was skeptical from the get-go … BUT for the sake of all the mothers around the world recommending it, I’m keeping an open mind 🙂

Let’s find out … if the epi-no get a big thumbs up or thumbs down.

Some follow up information has also been sent to me regarding a systematic review published by the The International Urogynecological Association (2015) (attached here), which showed:

  • Epi-No did not reduce episiotomy rates nor second stage of labor, and did not increase intact perineum.
  • No influence of Epi-No on reducing all perineal tears or severe (3rd/4th) perineal tears.

Conclusion: Epi-No birth trainer is a device that did not reduce episiotomy rates and had no influence on reducing perineal tears.

Here is a great video which explains and demonstrates perineal massage.

I hope this information has been helpful.

If you disagree and would still like to try the epi no, then it’s been suggested you find an experienced practitioner who can safely assist you with your preparation. As we know … we are all different, so of course our birth prep is going to be different.

Would love to know your thoughts on the epi-no chilbirth trainer … you can comment below.

Please share this post with any pregnant mamas if you think it will be helpful to them.

Thank you!
